Introduction to Coding

This free, three-hour workshop is open to everyone and is designed for those who are curious about coding, but who have very little or no coding experience. You’ll learn about the tech industry directly from Grand Circus alumni who have made the jump to a career in tech and leave with a finished coded project you can show off to family and friends. That’s pretty cool.

Introduction to Front-End

Dive deeper into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with this one day workshop. You’ll learn to use each of these languages to make your website more interactive and exciting. You’ll leave the class with a strong understanding of the basics of JavaScript, a project you can continue to develop, and insight into whether you want to become a front-end developer.

Introduction to Java

Learn the core functionality of the Eclipse IDE, the fundamentals of Java, and build several console applications. You’ll explore boolean logic, conditionals, and loops, take input, manipulate strings, and generate random numbers. You’ll leave the class with a strong understanding of the basics of Java, a project you can continue to develop, and insight into whether you want to join a back-end bootcamp.

What to expect

Bring your laptop if you have one. The class is a combination of lectures and labs so you can directly apply what you learn. It’s a lot like our bootcamps format. Most workshops are taught at our Detroit and Grand Rapids campuses to give you a feel of what it's like to be in the classroom. (We also do Intro to Coding workshops in the communities we serve!) All of our Learn to Code workshops are taught by amazing Grand Circus graduates who are passionate about teaching even more people to be developers.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend you start with our Free Intro to Coding Workshops. These three-hour workshops cover the basics of JavaScript and are a great first step for learning how to code. The course is created for people with little-to-no coding experience. You can also attend one of our monthly Info Sessions. Our Info Sessions give you a chance to meet Grand Circus staff and alumni, review curriculum and check out our space in Detroit. It is estimated that 1 million computer-programming jobs will be left unfilled by 2020. Coding bootcamps like ours help fill that gap much more quickly than colleges can. Our team will help you through the process of learning code and coach and support you as you prepare for a career you’ll love.

Both Chromebooks and tablets will work for the Intro to Coding workshop, however you’ll need a laptop for the other workshops. We have some at our Detroit and Grand Rapids campuses for onsite, in-person workshops.

You will need a computer, an open mind, and your enthusiasm. Regardless if you’re #TeamMac or #TeamPC, some of our workshops require you download free software, those details are provided when you register.

We care about you, your health, and your safety. We also still want to help you achieve your goals of changing your career and becoming a developer. As such, until further notice, all Grand Circus workshops will be offered remotely via Zoom. You’ll still get expert instruction, one-on-one support, and the family-feel of Grand Circus, all while we collectively work to Flatten the Curve.
