Detroit Codes Harder

Since the beginning of 2016, we’ve exposed over 1,800 individuals to coding through our free Intro to Coding Workshops. The Intro to Coding Workshops are part of a much longer history and much deeper effort. While many of us are doing our best, the tech industry remains no stranger to recurring patterns of discrimination and inequitable practices. We’ve known for a long time that if you’re going to be in tech, “you have to want to” (thanks for the empowering words Michelle Obama!) break those narratives. Meet the 2017 DEVELOP(her) Scholarship Recipients!

DEVELOP(her) scholarship recipientsThe tech industry should reflect the the diversity of our community. It’s a core value that Grand Circus stands behind in everything we do. With just 26% of computing jobs being filled by women, we’re always looking for creative solutions to the problem.

Last year, we were proud to launch our inaugural DEVELOP(her) coding bootcamp. It gave 19 women an opportunity at free tech training and assisted them in finding a career after graduation. This year, we were proud to award our first round of DEVELOP(her) scholarships, which provides full-tuition funding to a select number of ladies and can be used toward our full-time coding bootcamps.

Leeann Drees and Laura Eagin of ellell & co. joined the Grand Circus coworking family in Summer 2016. To say it’s been a treat to have them in our space is an understatement! While monthly massages certainly keep them excited to come in on Fridays, Leeann and Laura have both been super involved in the Grand Circus community and are a great addition to the Detroit’s Madison technology Block. Our Grand Rapids expansion continues

February 3, 2017

2017 is already off to an exciting start. In December, we wrapped up our first Grand Rapids .NET(C#) Bootcamp and now our team is gearing up for our second full-time .NET(C#) Bootcamp. The bootcamp starts on March 20, with final applications due February 24. (For those who apply by February 16, you’ll save $1,000).

As we continue expanding our tech offerings throughout West Michigan, we’re thrilled to be meeting some great thought leaders and collaborating with the growing tech community. (more…)

A Mission to Diversify the Tech Industry: DEVELOP(her)

I first discovered Grand Circus when I heard about the Apprenticeship Program, a course that provides non-traditional pathways to high-demand tech careers for those underrepresented in the industry. My first thought was, “Where can I find a job that allows me to make a real change that will impact my community?”. Lucky for me, Grand Circus was hiring!

Let’s Celebrate 2016

jennifer-cline-marketing-managerIt’s hard to believe it that 2016 is drawing to an end. Whew, what a year – am I right? This year, we’ve have an awful lot to be thankful for. It has been a great year of growth for us… for our community… our city… our team.. and as a company.

In January, I was thrilled to join the 10 amazing individuals making  Grand Circus a vibrant and impactful company. It’s just 11 short months later, and our team has nearly doubled. This means we have double the power to make tech more accessible while supporting our communities and diversifying the industry. Every day, I am excited to work alongside these folks, hang out with our community and work together toward our common goals. (more…)

Yes, you sitting there reading this blog. But not in the way you think.

For too long, the word “nerd” has been getting a bad rap. When most people think of the term, a simple, and often stereotypical, image comes to mind. As a company that works to train the next generation of tech employees, we see the effects of this unfortunate stereotype all too often. People often pigeonhole “techies” and developers with the dictionary definition of the word “nerd.” (more…)

Grand Circus Perks You Never Knew Existed

We love our students and want to support them in any way we can, creating the best possible experience for their learning. We find that extra perks make the experience that much better!

You don’t just get to hang out in Grand Circus’ cool space in downtown Detroit when you’re a bootcamp student.
