Leeann Drees and Laura Eagin of ellell & co. joined the Grand Circus coworking family in Summer 2016. To say it’s been a treat to have them in our space is an understatement! While monthly massages certainly keep them excited to come in on Fridays, Leeann and Laura have both been super involved in the Grand Circus community and are a great addition to the Detroit’s Madison technology Block. Read on to find out more about friends founding a company together and how Detroit has fostered its growth. (more…)
2017 is already off to an exciting start. In December, we wrapped up our first Grand Rapids .NET(C#) Bootcamp and now our team is gearing up for our second full-time .NET(C#) Bootcamp. The bootcamp starts on March 20, with final applications due February 24. (For those who apply by February 16, you’ll save $1,000).
As we continue expanding our tech offerings throughout West Michigan, we’re thrilled to be meeting some great thought leaders and collaborating with the growing tech community. (more…)
I first discovered Grand Circus when I heard about the Apprenticeship Program, a course that provides non-traditional pathways to high-demand tech careers for those underrepresented in the industry. My first thought was, “Where can I find a job that allows me to make a real change that will impact my community?”. Lucky for me, Grand Circus was hiring!
It’s hard to believe it that 2016 is drawing to an end. Whew, what a year – am I right? This year, we’ve have an awful lot to be thankful for. It has been a great year of growth for us… for our community… our city… our team.. and as a company.
In January, I was thrilled to join the 10 amazing individuals making Grand Circus a vibrant and impactful company. It’s just 11 short months later, and our team has nearly doubled. This means we have double the power to make tech more accessible while supporting our communities and diversifying the industry. Every day, I am excited to work alongside these folks, hang out with our community and work together toward our common goals. (more…)
You’re such a nerd.
Yes, you sitting there reading this blog. But not in the way you think.
For too long, the word “nerd” has been getting a bad rap. When most people think of the term, a simple, and often stereotypical, image comes to mind. As a company that works to train the next generation of tech employees, we see the effects of this unfortunate stereotype all too often. People often pigeonhole “techies” and developers with the dictionary definition of the word “nerd.” (more…)
At Grand Circus, our committed to diversity is embedded in everything we do. From our core values to student and employee recruitment, we work hard to ensure we’re recognizing talent from every background. We’ve spent much of this year working closely with various organizations, such as Code2040, to identify new ways we can improve as a team and share this mission throughout our community.
We love our students and want to support them in any way we can, creating the best possible experience for their learning. We find that extra perks make the experience that much better!
You don’t just get to hang out in Grand Circus’ cool space in downtown Detroit when you’re a bootcamp student. Even though that is a pretty sweet perk, there are a lot of other things that come with joining the Grand Circus community. When you’re here, you’re family – and this family likes discounts!
So what kind of perks do coding bootcamp students get?
At Grand Circus, we’re always looking for new ways to put Detroit first. That’s why we jumped headfirst into the opportunity to be involved in this year’s Grow Detroit’s Young Talent Program (GDYT), which helped employ more than 8,000 youth this summer.
Now wrapping up its third year, GDYT connected Detroit youth aged 14-24 with six weeks of valuable paid work experience, professional development and skills training to help set them up for future success. With over 200 employers and 600 job sites, the program offered participants a wide range of experiences and a first-hand look at how businesses operate in the city. Over the six weeks, interns received anywhere from $8.00-$9.25/hour for 20 hours a week at the workplace with an additional 12 hours of professional development.
Now you may be asking yourself, “where does our coding bootcamp magic come in to all of this?”
Curious about our continued expansion? We have an updated blog on plans for 2017!
Grand Circus is taking our show on the road…to Grand Rapids! We’ll be hosting our first bootcamp starting late October in the city and are exciting to partner with Start Garden on our first open house and Intro to Coding Workshop on August 31. (Updated Sept. 2016: Thank you to everyone who attended our first-ever Grand Rapids workshop! We had a blast. Still interested in learning code? Join us December 5 at Spectrum Health for our next *free* Intro to Coding Workshop in Grand Rapids. RSVP!)
“We continue to see the need for developers increase throughout Michigan, and we’re excited to bring our .NET (C#) coding bootcamp to Grand Rapids,” said Damien Rocchi, CEO of Grand Circus. “By 2020, there will be an estimated 1 million unfilled computer-science jobs. It’s important that qualified training institutes, like Grand Circus, expand to new cities to alleviate this skills gap.”
The .NET Bootcamp will begin October 24 and is a full-time, 10-week program (the first two weeks of this are prework, which is done at home). Our .NET (C#) Developer Bootcamp will introduce you to the fundamentals of enterprise development (.NET), the use of Visual Studio, methods using SQL databases, and how to design and deploy object-oriented applications. (Update: Our next Grand Rapids .NET(C#) starts March 20. Applications close 2/24.)
